Ice Skating under Robson St

One of the main things I wanted to do this holiday season was to go ice skating at the renewed Robson Rink. I got to go this week with my friend's Jen and Serg.

This place is amazing. I am telling you, you have to go! It was so much fun! I brought us a thermos full of hot chocolate and I think this really adds to the whole winter wonderland vibe.

It was full of skaters, and it was beautiful. I think it would be a great date place, if you like to skate. Skating around, holding hands, drinking some coco, ahhh. But it is also a great place to go with good friends.

One of the cutest parts was the mini Zamboni that looks like a killer whale! I think they should make the one at GM Place look like one too!

Jen and Serg

Here is what I wore:

Where: Robson Rink

What: Jacket: Hong Kong $20
Sweater: Aritzia $80
Jean: Lushuz $40
Toque: Mintage $20
Skate: Mine

Why: It can be hard what to wear to something where you have to be warm but you still want to be stylish. The solution, I am wearing long johns under my skinny jeans and a long john top under my sweater! I used to work in film and would have to spend hours standing outside in the rain and cold while filming. I quickly learned that long johns and wool sock are your best friend and will keep you warm!

Making Christmas

This year I am making almost all the gifts that I am giving. I had a bit of a financial struggle in the second half of 2009 and I just can't afford to do a big blow out of gifts. Also I find that people really love getting things that you have made just for them!

My friend Jen, is what I would call the Blair to my Serena. She loves the hairband and rocks them better than most people I know. I, on the other hand, can barely wear a hairband long enough to wash my face! So for Christmas, I made her this:

I got a plain white hairband from the Dollar Store and then covered it in tons of white feathers I got a Dressew. I just glue gunned them on. Then I added the black feather, and on top a button I found on the floor of a change room one time. It was so much fun and I love it!

I gave it to her a few days ago and I am pretty sure she love it too!! Christmas Success!

Fancy Nancy Wine and Cheese

Every year just before Christmas I throw a Fancy Nancy Wine and Cheese Party at my place. Its really an excuse for my friend's and I to dress up and be festive. This year it was a little last minute so not a lot of people were able to make it but it was as fun as always.

If you have not heard of the Fancy Nancy books you should really check them out. They are all about a little girl who wants everything to be fancy, I love her!
Here is just a few of the fancy people who showed up this year.

Jen and Serg
Aren't they cute? Jen was working the who 40's film star look!

Jenn and Matt( New Engaged!)
I love that they are wearing matching red! I asked and no they didn't do it on purpose.
Here is what I wore:
Where: My apartment for Fancy Nancy and then Library Square

What: Crown: Christmas Stocking last year
Shrug: Estate Sale $50
Silk Dress: Estate Sale $30
Shoes: H&M $40

Why: I insisted that everyone be a bit fancy for this party so I have to show them how its done. I didn't actually wear the shrug for long, it was too hot in my apartment. And when we went out dancing I was afraid it would get dirty. I did however wear the crown out dancing, and it was AWESOME!

Yaletown Brewpub

I was getting ready for work at Lushuz yesterday and realized I was sick of wearing jeans. Don't get me wrong I love jeans but sometimes you need a day off. So I took this summery dress and made it winter ready. I love this outfit.

Why: I am shopping my closet a lot these days and this was a way to wear a summer dress in a different season. Layers are amazing. I was also wearing a long grey grandpa cardigan over top and with my warm coat I was nice and toasty!

Henley(under): Bootlegger $20
Tights: The Bay $10
Boots: Aldo Outlet $50
Cuff: Value Village $2

Shoes: Aldo $20
Earrings: Le Chateau $19
Cuff: Value Village $2

Stay tuned for The Bay staff party......

Photobooth Photos!

I told you about the Flickn Awesome Photo Party I was at last night and I wanted to share our free photobooth pictures with you! Amazing right!

Flickn Awesome Photo Event

Yesterday I worked at my clothing store job in the afternoon after a morning of paper writing. One more week till I am done school till April and I am very excited! For now I am extremely busy but I am trying to find sometime every day to update as this is fun for me and lets me be creative. Basically its not school work!

Where: Off to work on 4th.

Why: I have had this shirt since grade 9 and have never known how to wear it. I have to say I must not have know sizing back in the day as it finally fits and I have figure it out.

What: Sweater: unknown $19
Skirt: Le Chateau price unknown
Tights: The Bay $10
Shoes: Joe Fresh $20
Necklace: Thrifted $2
Cuff: Value Village $2
Watch: Yardsale $1

After a hard afternoon off work it was off to the Flickn Awesome Photo Party at the Fortune Sound Club in Chinatown, presented by VancouverIsAwesome. They asked 99 photographers around town to submit some photos for an exhibit/fundraiser for the non profit blog. I was one of the 99 photographers they asked. It was really exciting to see two of my photos up on the wall along side so many other awesome shots.

My friend's Ali, Jen, and Sergio all came with and I have to say we make a stylist bunch. Check out these sparkle tights my friend Ali is wearing. First thing we get there and Jen asks "Are those the American Apparel tights?" Ali replies with pride "Nope, Joe Fresh". You know that means they cost about $10 bucks. Amazing!

Tights: Joe Fresh!!

Where: Fortune Sound Club in Chinatown with Ali, Jen and Sergio

Why: Because what do you wear out when it is freezing but you want to look good?

What: 1960's Velvet Tiger minidress: True Value Vintage $50
Tights: The Bay $10
Shoes: Aldo Outlet $19
Earrings: Aldo $20
Cuff: Value Village $2
Watch: Yardsale $1

Street Style: Zootz Hair Studio

I saw this lovely girl standing outside the back door of Zootz Hair Studio at 4th and Arbutus yesterday and two thoughts went through my head instantly. First: I want that dress and Secondly: I hope it cost her a pretty penny. No my friends, that dress was $3.99 at Value Village! I want it so bad! It is adorable, and Italian.

The dress is thrifted at Value Village and I am sure that purse sitting at the top of the steps is thrifted too. Please note the amazing hair dye job she is rocking! I sometimes wish I was that fearless with my hair but I have come to the conclusion that I am not.

After approaching her to see if I could get her picture, and asking where did she find this dress, we got into a little chat about thrifting. I had to agree with her on it being mostly about luck, you can go into a place on Monday and find nothing and then Tuesday find 10 things you love and are on sale. It is crazy! Also I think one of my favourite things is to check small town thrift shops when I am anywhere. I have found the best items at the cheapest prices in small towns, its like no one knows what gems they have!

So keep a look out people, you never know when thrift shop gold will fall in your lap.

Payphone?

I must start this post with who still uses a pay phone? I realize in the case of an emergency (aka your cell phone is dead) they can be very handy but on the 8th floor of my school? I can't think of one single person in my class that doesn't have one. In fact I can only think of one person I know who doesn't have a cell phone and trust me when she needs to make a call she doesn't use a pay phone, she borrows someone's cell! Still it is kinda cool in a retro I used to use this to say I'd be late for curfew kinda way.

Where: To class after a day of homework hell!

Why: Because I was looking in the mirror brushing my teeth and this outfit popped into my head. Sometimes you just go with it.

What: Vest, Salvaged from my parent's dress up box
T-shirt: American Apparel $15
Jeans: Lushuz $70
Boots: Aldo Outlet $50
Brooch: H&M $5
Watch: Yardsale $1
Cuff: Value Village $2

Now I'm off to bed!

PS Wish me luck, finals start tomorrow!

My Style: Frantic Friday!

This Friday I was crazy busy all day and the only thing keeping me going was knowing that at the end of the day I was having drinks with my girl Catherine. We haven't been able to find time to hang in over 2 months so we had a lot of catching up to do.

Outfit #1: Daytime
Where: Running around town, and off to work.

Why: I need something that I could wear to a fit modelling job in the morning that would translate straight into a serving outfit for work, but didn't look like a uniform.

What: Jean Jacket: Bootlegger $40
Sweater: Gift from my friend, Taryn
Dress: H&M $16
Tight: The Bay $10
Boots: B2 $170
Toque: Mintage on Commercial Dr. $20
Scarf: Le Chateau $15

Outfit #2: Nightime
Where: Drinks at Hell's Kitchen on West 4th

Why: Hell's Kitchen is not really fancy place so I went for the casual Friday night look but still good for if we had decided to head downtown for some dancing. Plus these boots I have had for 5 years and they never let me down!

What: Sweater: Zara $20
Tank: H&M $15
Jeans: Lushuz on West 4th $70
Boots: Aldo Outlet $50
Earring: Coombs Country Market $5
Cuff: Value Village $2
Watch: Yard sale $1

Now I am off to do about 8 hours of homework. Wish me luck!

To my classmates.....

Hi guys!

Just wanted to welcome you to my blog. I really hope you like it. I have been working on it for roughly two years now and it is one of the things I look forward to working on everyday. It started as a way to express my fashion creativity and a way to challenge myself to dress fabulous every day. It has since taken on a life of its own, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Now get back to studying and those massive projects!

See you in class!
Love,
Girl

Store of the Week: Queensbury Flower Company

Store of the Week: Queensbury Flower Company

Last week's opening of Queensbury Flower Company, Your Urban Flower Kiosk in the Granville Skytrain station was a success. It is the most beautiful kiosk I have ever seen, including in Europe. I just love it. It is a red and black and beautiful. True, red is my favourite colour but that is not why I have chosen them as store of the week. I picked them because the flowers are perfect but not expensive! Most importantly they last! I have had my flowers for a week and they look like I just picked them up.

Store owner Kanako knows her stuff and that always makes for a store I want to visit over and over again. She is friendly and loves flowers. I have an engagement party to attend next Sunday and I know that I'll be getting some flowers from Queensbury before I head to the party.
Also if you don't see the combo of flowers you are looking for ask the people working as I am sure they can make a few small changes for you or you can make one with the loose roses they sell. Prices are different depending on what you get but I got a small bouquet for ten dollars, and it was so beautiful. I have enjoyed looking at it all week.

So head down to Queensbury Flower Company at Granville Station and check out the amazing flowers for yourself. Over the next years expect to see more of these wonderful kiosk around town, I have a feeling business will be blooming for this young entrepreneur.

Winter Hair

After having more than a few of my friends ask me about keeping their hair healthy I decided a post was needed.

I do a lot with my hair and I know that not everyone else does. I have naturally wavy hair that will usually do what I want it to, so I personally use a shampoo and conditioner specifically for the type of hair style I am going for that day. If I'm going curly I use a wave enhancing one, straight I use a volume enhancing one. Having recently been switching around jobs my budget has been extra tight and this has made me fall in love with the Sunsilk line of hair products. So much so that when I am back on the money train I will not be switching back to a more expensive line. Their products do what they say they will and my hair looks great!

After that shower its the same thought process. I use styling products specifically for the look I wan to achieve. And also something that protects against the heat of my blow dyer/curling iron/straighter abuse that I inflict on my hair.

That being said I do not wash my hair everyday. More so in the winter, there is actually a difference in the way one should care for their hair in the winter than in the summer. With all the wind and cold outside and the dry heat of inside, your hair drys out more, which will lead to frizzy, static and split ends. Washing it everyday has the same effect. It can dry out your hair too much, as you are never letting the natural oils condition it.

Now if you do nothing else to keep you hair in shape, you should deep condition it once a week and the one that has never let me down is the Aussie 3 minute miracle. It makes my hair soft as a baby's. I suggest not doing it on a day where you are planning on making your hair do something, because I always find it is too soft for a style. Just let it be soft and healthy on say a Sunday.

Any other beauty questions?

Pink Boyfriend Blazer

This picture is actually from awhile ago but I have never posted it before. I went to a sample sale with my friend, Jen and I scored a couple really cool pieces. This pink boyfriend blazer was one of them.

Jacket: Sample sale $15
Top: S.O.S thrift shop $5
Jeans: Zara $50
Shoes: Aldo $60

You got to love a good sample sale, but one piece of advice. Don't buy it just because it is super on sale. If you are not going to wear it at full price, you still won't wear it at a cheap price! Learned that one from Tim Gun:)

Queensberry Flower Company

Do you love flowers? I know I do. I love a couple kinds more than other but in general I love flowers. The real ones, that is. Any of my friends will tell you in a heartbeat that I basically refuse to wear them on my body, as patterns, but real flowers warm my heart everytime.

Now the exciting part is that friend who is very dear to my heart it opening her own flower shop tomorrow. I am so happy for her, you think I like flowers, she LOVES them. She is also very talented with flowers! She makes beautiful arrangements and has ideas I would never think of when it comes to plants and floral.

Her shop, Queensberry Flower Company, opens up Thursday November 19, in the Granville Skytrain Station at the top of the escalators closest to The Bay. Please come and check it out. It is the big red stall, and I hear there will be sexy men handing out roses for the ladies. Also Gentlemen if you are looking for the perfect bouquet for your lovely lady, this is the place to get one she has never seen before. So I hope to see you all there tomorrow. Tell her Girl in the City sent you. I know I'll be there to see this dream come to life. I hope you will too.

See you there,
Girl

1950's Pin-up

Before we get to far away from Halloween and are swept away by the Christmas Spirit, I wanted to show you guys my Halloween costume! I borrowed the sailor pieces from my friend Jenn and then thought "helloo pin up!". I love pin-ups, I have a few framed pictures in my apartment of pin-ups from a calendar I had a few years ago. So I was very excited to get the make-up and such just right. I was very happy with how it turned out and the fact that people actually guessed that I was a pin-up and not just a "slutty sailor". After a pre-freast at a friend's place, we all danced the night away at Library Square, what a great night. Hope you all had as much fun as I did!

Christmas is in the air....ALREADY?

That's right people it is November second and the trees are up at the Chapters on Robson and Howe. Also word on the street is that tomorrow, November third, the red cups are back at Starbucks, complete with Peppermint Lattes!

Now I love Christmas but it is too soon, I am still in a sugar coma from Halloween and I need time to recuperate between large holidays. I am I the only one!?

Pink Seam for Breast Cancer

As I get older I am getting bolder with my fashion choices. I am sure this has something do to with not caring as much what other people think about what I am wearing, and just wearing what I love.

I received these tights as part of a gift bag at a breast cancer fundraiser many years ago and have never know what to wear them with. Or had the guts to just go for it. Well after wearing the polka dot tights last week I decided to go for it. Plus the pink seam up the back is for breast cancer, with October being breast cancer awareness month I can't think of a better time to break them in.

Blouse: H&M, gift from NYC, from a friend
Skirt: Le Chateau $50
Tights: Wolford Free
Shoes: Aldo Outlet $20
Watch: Yardsale $1
Cuff: Value Village $2
Earring: Gift from my grandmother

I can't wait to get some more patterned tights! Somethings do get more fun with age!

Girl
