Around Town

Hi all,
Sorry its been awhile since I last posted. I've been adjusting to  my crazy new schedule. Working full time and going to school at night is not easy, let me tell you. And I feel this new unjustified pressure to dress well everyday now that I am at "Fashion School". I know no one is expecting it but I feel it any ways. What even crazier is that I m feeling a need to dress more casual, this is something I am not good at. I love heels, dresses, skirts, tights, blouses, skinny jeans, ect. But at a community college this is not the case. Everyone is dress more casual. I mean I love a great pencil skirt, how many of you have worn a pencil skirt to a 3 hour lecture? Its more stressful than the schooling. Okay maybe thats a bit much but its weird. Well yesterday I decided screw it I didn't finally become okay with dressing however I wanted just to change it for school. Casual be damned! Here's some of my latest outfits:

Friday:
Drinks with the girls:

Dress: Joe Fresh $25
Tight: American Apparel $16
Shoes: Aldo
Necklaces: Both Thrifted
Earrings: Coombs Country Market $5
Cuff: Thrifted $2

Saturday:
Going away party for Claudia at Yaletown Brew Pub, Opus Lounge, and Bar None:
Tank Top: American Apparel 2 for $22
Skirt: Le Chateau $60(xmas gift card)
Jacket: H&M $25
Tights: American Apparel $16
Shoes: Aldo $60
Umbrella: Shoppers $12
Necklace: Aldo $15
Cuff: Thrifted $2
Earrings: Hong Kong Street Market $2
Clutch: Gift from my Man's parents

Tuesday:
Running around town and going to class:

Jacket: H&M $25
T-shirt(underneath): American Apparel $15
Skirt: American Apparel $20
Tight: American Apparel $16
Shoes: Aldo $60
Scarf: Chapters $15
Cuff: Thrifted $2
Bag: Le Chateau $30

Side note: I never shop at American Apparel anymore but its good for basics. Also it has been really cold lately but a trick I learned is to wear two pairs of tight at the same time. It will keep you toasty warm when outside but you wont over heat when inside.

Well I'm back to my studies.
See ya soon,
Girl

First Day of School

Yesterday was my first day of school. I am going back after about 7 years since I went to make-up school and it feels great! I am taking Fashion Merchandising through night class. Still have to pay the bills, right? My first class last night was awesome and I am looking forward to my second class tonight. I am finding only one problem, its a lot harder to decide what to wear when everyone one in the room is fashion student! Here is what I wore last night. I was having a bit of fun with the settings on my camera so it a little weird.

Coat: Le Chateau (Gift)
Pants: Rewind Denim $40
Boots: Aldo $50
Scarf: Le Chateau $25

Now I have to decide on tonight's outfit, wish me luck!

New Years Eve

For New Year's Eve my man, some friends and I headed out to the Blarney Stone. We actually went there last year as well. Its a great place, you always have fun and for new years tickets it fairly inexpensive. Only 35 dollars. Plus you get a party hat and champagne. Also you get to listen to the hardest working band in Vancouver. My man and I are both part Irish so we like to say that we want to celebrate with family. Before going to the Blarney Stone we went over to my man's brother's place to have a little pre-midnight champagne. It was really great to see them on New Years Eve.

I didn't want to go out and spend a lot on a new outfit for the night so I took some pieces I already had and just add some life. The only new thing I got for the night was the skirt which was a steal at H&M. H&M is having a huge boxing week sale right now that I really suggest you check out. I even saw men's dress shirts for 20 dollars.

Top: H&M $15
Skirt: H&M $20
Shoes: Aldo $25
Earrings: Le Chateau $10
Cuff: Value Village $2
Watch: Value Village $30
Belts: H&M $12(for 2)
Tiara: Free (from the Blarney Stone)

For the travel between my warm apartment to the warm bar I just tossed on my shrunken tuxedo jacket that I got a while back. Love that jacket, it goes with so many outfits.

Here is a close up the shoes. Aren't they fabulous? I love how they have ever color in them. I seem  to always name my clothes, like I have my carrie dress, my bond dress and these will be my gas slick shoes. Do they not look it when the road is wet and there is that bit of gas where a car was park gleaming with all the colors. Its not good for the environment but it looks really cool.

Here is what my friends wore to ring in the new year. First my man:

Shirt: Mexx (xmas gift from his bro and fiance)
Cords: ?
Vans: Gravity Pope $60
Cuff Links: Aldo (xmas gift from me)
Watch: A Canucks watch, a non tacky one (from my parents)
Hat: Free (from the Blarney Stone)

Dusty:

Katie:

Ali:

I really love New Years Eve, not for the big hype it gets but for the fact that everyone dresses up just a little and it you get to kiss lots of people at midnight. Plus how often can you post a picture like this on your blog?

Happy New Year Everyone!

Faux Fur

A couple days ago I headed out for breakfast with my friend Taryn before work. The night before some of the girls I work with and I had talked about when I was in Vernon for some of my holidays that I had brought my vintage faux fur coat with me but I never got a chance to wear it. The coat is super warm and it was freezing in Vernon. The coat is also a little fashion forward for Vernon. So I thought I would test it out on Robson St. Turns out it might be a bit much for Vancouver too.

Now I was wondering if it is the coat in general or is it because people think I am wearing fur? First off it is my grandmother's coat from the '60s. My grandfather bought it for her when they lived in Kamloops. It does not look like real fur to me but I could see how someone walking by might think it is real. I personally don't have a problem with vintage furs, they have already been made and worn. Just throwing them away does not reverse the fact that an animal dead. Where as I am not a fan of buying a new fur, its seem unnecessary to me. I also do not try to force my beliefs on anyone else, not about fur, not about how you eat, not about anything. I think anyone has the right to choose how they believe. I also expect this in return and that is where I find the problem.

A lot of people feel that if they believe something, like wearing fur is evil and wrong, that they have the right to push it on you. I only hope I am not wearing my faux fur and get harshly confronted. I will stand up for myself and my coat, because not only is it a nice coat but I would love to pass it on to my own child or grandchild, it would be unfair for a stranger to take that away from me. But it is not just faux fur coats that get strange looks from the average bus rider, and what I really hope to pass on to my child, grandchild, is the knowledge that you can be whoever you choose to be, not everyone will like it but who you are is important and worth standing up for. Be it it dressing however you want, or to the more serious like loving whomever you want, and that I will stand with them.

So how do you feel about fur, faux or real? And how do you feel about your fellow bus riders? So today as you go about your day love your fellow bus riders a little more and judge them a little less. Happy New Year!
